History of the Winery

1992 is a milestone year for the dentist Spyros Markatselis, as not only is it the year his second son comes to life, but he also takes the big decision to fulfill his student dream: To produce his own wine from his own vineyards. So, without wasting any more precious time, he decides to replant the already existing but aged vineyard of his grandfather with 40 new vineyards. Until 1998, the vineyard grows continuously. At the urging of friends and acquaintances, the producer is convinced to move on to the next stage: bottling and marketing of the wine that he had been producing exclusively for himself and his friends.
In 2005, the first-born son, Michalis Markatselis begins his studies at the School of Oenology and Beverage Technology in Athens. On the occasion of this event, the idea of a winery with all the licenses and certifications needed to make the family’s wine known is born in the mind of Lena, Spiros’ wife. This will happen a year later, in 2006, when the Markatseli family will have the first winery license in Thesprotia (100 m2) and the first wine bottling license. The vineyard at that time was only 4 hectares and the wines produced did not exceed 3 tons. After a decade of uninterrupted effort and will, in 2016, the vineyard has now grown both in area and production. In addition to the original vineyard, two more vineyard plots of 20 and 6 hectares respectively are planted. The 30 hectares are located in the villages of Dafni and Finiki of Filiates, Thesprotia, near each other.
The second son, Alexandros Markatselis, having grown up influenced by wine and its production, studied Oenology and Viticulture at the Agricultural University of Florence in Italy. He returned to his hometown in 2020 full of knowledge and appetite to take the reins of the winery. In the near future, the goals of the Markatseli Winery are to create a new state-of-the-art model winery in the region of Thesprotia, highlighting the indigenous varieties that have been almost abandoned and continuing to produce quality wine with respect to the raw materials and the consumers.

Spiridon Markatselis

Dentist/Wine producer

Spyridon Markatselis studied at the Athens School of Dentistry and is a renowned dentist. Simultaneously with his professional career as a dentist, he did not leave the family vineyard, which he inherited from his grandfather, untapped. The complete transition takes place in 2006. His passion for the vineyard and his love for quality wine leads him to create the first official winery in the region of Thesprotia.

Alexandros Markatselis

Wine expert/Sommelier

Alexandros Markatselis studied Oenology and Viticulture at the Agricultural University of Florence, Italy. He also holds a degree in Oenology with specialization in the Greek vineyard from the WSPC. He belongs to the second generation of winemakers and from 2020 he has undertaken the development of the winery and the new winemaking.

FATMIR ALI

Vineyard Manager/Winery assistant

Fatmir Ali has studied at the Agricultural School with specialization in Plant Cultivation in Tirana, Albania. He is the manager of the vineyard and the soul of the winery for 20 years

Olga Tzafou

Architect

Olga Tzafou has studied Architecture at the prestigious “La Sapienza” University of Rome. She creates the labels for the wines of our winery.

Photographer

Vangelis is a self-made photographer and video editor. He is responsible for all the photographic needs of our winery and develops our digital image on a daily basis.

ZAFEIROPOULOU ELEANNA

Chemistry-Oinologist

Eleanna has studied Chemistry-Oinologist at the Chemical University of Thessaloniki and in the near future she will help us by taking over the chemical analysis of our wines as well as a part of the wine tastings and the various events we create.

The Shepherd rosé hat eine lachsfarbene Farbe, die durch den 6-stündigen Kontakt des Saftes mit den Trauben entsteht. In der Nase dominieren Primäraromen von Erdbeere und roter Kirsche.
Am Gaumen ist der Wein trocken mit hohem Säuregehalt, mittlerem Körper und Erdbeer- und Pflaumennoten.

Ein Wein mit einem knackigen Abgang.

6 Monate in Edelstahltanks gereift.

Genießen Sie ihn bei 8-10°C.

Ein ausgeprägter Roséwein mit kräftigem Charakter, der gut zu Obst, Schalentieren, Fleisch und rotem Fleisch sowie zu gefülltem Fleisch passt!

INFORMATION

The Shepherd rosé has a salmon colour due to the contact of the juice with the grapes for 6 hours. The nose is dominated by primary aromas of strawberry and red cherry.
On the palate the wine is dry with high acidity, medium body and characteristics of strawberry, and plum.

A wine with a crisp finish.

Aged 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

Enjoy at 8-10°C.

A distinctive rosé wine with a robust character that goes well with fruit, shellfish, meats and red meats, as well as pairs beautifully with stuffed meats!

Der weiße The Shepherd hat eine gelbliche Farbe, die durch den 10-stündigen Kontakt des Saftes mit den Trauben entsteht. In der Nase dominieren Primäraromen von Birne und Apfel-Lauch.
Am Gaumen ist der Wein trocken mit hohem Säuregehalt, vollmundig und mit blumigen und zitrusartigen Noten.

Ein Wein mit einem spürbaren Nachgeschmack.

6 Monate lang in Edelstahltanks gereift.

Genießen Sie ihn bei 8-10°C.

White The Shepherd has a yellowish colour due to the contact of the juice with the grapes for 10 hours. The nose is dominated by primary aromas of pear and apple leek.
On the palate the wine is dry with high acidity, full body and floral and citrus characteristics.

A wine with a noticeable aftertaste.

Aged for 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

Ο ΠΟΙΜΕΝΑΣ

ΠΛΗΡΟΦΟΡΙΕΣ

Ο ροζέ Ποιμένας έχει βαθύ ροζέ χρώμα λόγω της επαφής
του χυμού με τα στέμφυλα για
  14 ώρες.
Στη μύτη κυριαρχούν πρωτογενή αρώματα φράουλας, κόκκινο κεράσι, μούρα και τριαντάφυλλο

Στο στόμα το κρασί είναι ξηρό με υψηλή οξύτητα, γεμάτο σώμα
και χαρακτηριστικά από κεράσι, και δαμάσκηνο. 

Ένα κρασί με τραγανή επίγευση.

Παλαίωση 6 μήνες σε ανοξείδωτες δεξαμενές.

Απολαύστε το στους 8-10°C.

Ένα ιδιαίτερο ροζέ κρασί με στιβαρό χαρακτήρα που
συνοδεύεται με φρούτα, με οστρακοειδή, με λευκά και κόκκινα κρέατα, καθώς επίσης ταιριάζει υπέροχα με γεμιστά!

Ο λευκός Ποιμένας έχει κιτρινωπό χρώμα λόγω της επαφής του χυμού με τα στέμφυλα για 10 ώρες. Στη μύτη κυριαρχούν πρωτογενή αρώματα αχλαδιού και πράσiνου μήλου.
Στο στόμα το κρασί είναι ξηρό με υψηλή οξύτητα, γεμάτο σώμα και χαρακτηριστικά από άνθη και εσπεριδοειδή.

Ένα κρασί με τραγανή επίγευση.

Παλαίωση 6 μήνες σε ανοξείδωτες δεξαμενές.

Απολαύστε το στους 8-10°C.
